Are You in the Flow?
Have you ever had a day where everything seems to fall into place?
You get things done without effort. The right person responds at the right time. You feel focused, supported, and calm in your body. It’s almost as if life is cooperating.
And then there are the other days…
A simple task turns into a “whole thing.” You sit down to work and your mind feels foggy. You try harder, push more, and somehow the day gets heavier instead of lighter.
If you’re highly sensitive (or simply someone who picks up on a lot), you may notice this contrast more strongly. Your energy isn’t a background detail—it’s the foundation.
A gentle invitation (before you read on): if you recognize the pattern of forcing because you’re trying to prove you’re “good enough,” you may enjoy my 2-minute Imposter Syndrome / “Good Enough?” Quiz.

Flow vs. Force
Flow doesn’t mean you never have deadlines, responsibilities, or difficult moments.
Flow means you’re working with yourself instead of against yourself.
When you’re in flow, you tend to notice:
• your body feels steadier
• decisions come more easily
• conversations feel smoother
• you’re productive without feeling drained by it
When you’re forcing, you might notice:
• tightness in your chest or jaw
• shallow breathing
• irritation, frustration, or self-criticism
• tasks that “should” take 20 minutes turning into two hours
The shift point is often awareness.
Not “positive thinking.”
Not “push through.”
Just simple awareness: What’s happening in me right now?
Here’s a quick practice I use often—especially on days when my list feels loud.
Pause and ask:
1. How do I feel right now?
Tired? Pressured? Scattered? Calm? Clear?
2. What feels like the lightest next step?
Not the biggest step. The lightest one.
3. What would help my nervous system settle for five minutes first?
A short walk. Water. Fresh air. Stretching. Tidy one small surface. Quiet.
This isn’t about avoiding your responsibilities.
It’s about choosing the order you meet them in—so your energy is supporting you.
Highly sensitive people often have a strong sense of responsibility.
You care deeply. You want to do things well. You don’t want to disappoint anyone.
That’s beautiful—and it can also become the reason you push past your own signals.
When you override yourself repeatedly, your system eventually responds with:
• overwhelm
• procrastination
• emotional exhaustion
• a sense of “What is wrong with me?”
Often, nothing is wrong with you. Your energy is asking for a different approach.
Try this with something small first.
Pick one task on your list (a message you need to send, a form to complete, a piece of writing, a phone call).
Then ask: Does this feel like the right task for this moment?
If it does, begin—and notice how it moves.
If it doesn’t, choose a supportive alternative for 10 minutes:
• take a short walk
• clear one tiny area (a counter, a single pile of papers)
• play one uplifting song
• write three honest sentences in your journal: “What I’m feeling is…”
Then return and check again.
You might be surprised how quickly the task flows once your energy shifts.

If a person, conversation, or situation consistently leaves you feeling heavy, it’s worth paying attention.
Flow is not only about productivity—it’s also about alignment.
Ask:
• What part of this feels off for me?
• What boundary or support would make this easier?
• What is the kindest next step I can take?
Sometimes “flow” is taking action.
Sometimes “flow” is pausing long enough to hear what you already know.
If you’d like to explore this more deeply, try one of these prompts:
• Where in my life do I push when I feel uncertain or pressured?
• What does “flow” feel like in my body?
• What is one small choice I can make this week that supports my energy first?
If you find yourself forcing because you’re trying to prove you’re “good enough,” you’re not alone—and you’re not broken.

Sometimes the fastest path back into flow is simply understanding what’s driving the pressure.
Closing question: What’s one area of your life where you’re ready to choose flow over force?
