"In the end, just three things matter: How well we have lived. How well we have loved. How well we have learned to let go."
- Buddha
Introduction:
Have you ever noticed that the more you try to control life, the harder it becomes?
It’s like gripping a handful of sand. The more tightly you squeeze, the more it all slips away.
Many of us live with a constant undercurrent of anxiety, always trying to figure out the “right” next step, predict outcomes, and solve every possible problem before it even arises. If a problem does arise, we resist it and feel this shouldn’t be happening to us.
It may feel responsible and proactive, but what it really does is keep us in a state of tension. That tension cuts us off from our natural ability to see possibilities, connect with our inner wisdom, and experience life as the supportive, unfolding journey it’s meant to be.
This is what we’ve been taught. It’s what we’re conditioned to believe is the only way to succeed – that we have to ‘make’ things happen.
And actually, you may have had some success with this in the past. But I do believe we reach a point where we don’t have the energy for it anymore. Things don’t work as they used to and we find the more we push, the harder life becomes.
When we push, and constantly feel the need to control, we’re usually acting from fear. There can be many underlying fears, such as fear that things won’t work out unless we make them happen or even fear of what will happen if we do actually accomplish what we want. There can also be a fear that we may get it wrong – that we’re focusing on the wrong things.
When our actions come from fear, we often close the very doors we want to open. We miss subtle cues, intuitive nudges, and opportunities that don’t match the narrow plan we’ve created in our mind.
Life is not meant to be micromanaged into submission.
It’s meant to be co-created.
Relaxing into who you truly are means releasing the belief that your worth depends on constant doing, fixing, and controlling. It’s about trusting that your desires are valid, your inner wisdom is guiding you, and that you don’t need to have all the answers before you take a step.
When you let go of forcing, you start to notice:
You’re more creative and resourceful.
Ideas and solutions come with less effort.
People and opportunities seem to show up at the right time.
Life begins to feel more like an adventure than a battle.
Relaxing into flow doesn’t mean becoming passive or doing nothing, it means shifting from forcing to allowing. You still take action, but it’s action that feels inspired, clear, and aligned rather than pressured and exhausting.
Here are some ways to begin:
Pause and Breathe: When you feel the urge to push or overthink, take a few slow breaths and let your shoulders drop.
Ask Different Questions: Instead of “How can I make this happen?” try “What’s the next step that feels light and possible?”
Practice Trust: Remind yourself of times when something worked out in unexpected, wonderful ways without you controlling it.
Connect With Joy: Spend time doing things that make you feel alive and present. Joy naturally puts you in a receptive state.
When you relax into your own presence and allow yourself to be guided, life stops feeling like a problem to solve and starts feeling like an enjoyable journey, with you moving from one step to the next effortlessly.
Instead of chasing, you attract.
Instead of struggling, you discover.
Instead of burning out, you feel nourished by the process.
This is when life begins to unfold in ways you couldn’t have planned but that feel even better than you imagined.
My journey from feeling I have to work harder and control everything to relaxing and allowing has not been an easy one. But through the process I have learned that the need to control comes very much from not knowing who we truly are.
When you know who you are energetically, you begin to understand your purpose, which increases confidence. Then you’re able to release all the past conditioning and beliefs that made you fearful and feeling like you had to control everything. You begin to trust yourself and trust that life is happening for you, not to you.
This is why I consistently emphasize the importance of deep levels of self-awareness, of understanding your own energy blueprint. With this awareness things start to fall into place. Your life makes more sense. You realize that there is no need for struggle. It’s liberating!
