Narrow street in Spain with whitewashed walls — a reminder that sometimes we have to slow down and trust the path ahead

Life Isn't Just The Highlights

I just got back from two weeks in Spain.

Of course, I want to tell you about the magic: the whitewashed village we stayed at near the ocean, the roof terrace we spent hours on, the flamenco show, the food, meeting up with family on my birthday. All of that was real, and all of it was wonderful.

But there was another part too. The trip also had some challenges, and this is what most people don’t share.

The Part We Don't Talk About

Everywhere we went outside there were people smoking, and it was very difficult to escape cigarette smoke. We had a very nice rental car but discovered it had no rear visibility and a metal grill blocking the back window, making reversing extremely difficult.

Navigating bumper-to-bumper parking in streets barely wide enough for the car. GPS routes that led us into lanes so narrow we couldn’t turn around, couldn’t back up, couldn’t even open the doors. My husband has driven all over the world and is a confident driver, but he was stressed.

I’m sharing this because these are the experiences most people leave out when they talk about travel. And yet they’re often the ones that matter most.

The Challenges are Part of The Experience

Here’s what I’ve noticed: the challenges don’t diminish the experience. They’re part of it.

When things don’t go smoothly, and you can’t control what’s in front of you, you get to see something about yourself — how you respond. Whether you can accept, adapt, and move on. Or whether you let it color everything else and spoil the experience.

That’s not just true on a trip to Spain. It’s true in your everyday life too.

The situations that don’t go to plan, the things that feel frustrating or inconvenient or outside your control — those experiences are where real growth happens, because those moments show you where you’re holding on to control, still resisting, still expecting life to cooperate on your terms.

What if the Challenge is Showing You the Way?

What if the challenge wasn’t in your way, but showing you the way?

Travel has a particular gift: it resets your energy. Stepping outside your normal life creates space to see it differently when you come back. But you don’t need a plane ticket to access that reset.

You can start by noticing where, right now, you’re resisting something that simply is what it is. Where are you fighting the narrow street instead of driving slowly through it?

“Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.” — Virginia Satir

The full experience, both the magic and the difficulty, is what makes life an adventure. And it’s in the difficult parts that you find out who you really are.

I’d love to know: what came up for you reading this? Where in your life are you currently fighting with the challenges in your life?
