Make Time For Yourself: A Life-Changing Priority

August 28, 20247 min read

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." - Anne Lamott

Introduction:

How often have you found yourself running on empty, trying to juggle the endless demands of work, family, relationships, and self-improvement?

If you're a professional woman, this balancing act probably feels all too familiar. You’re constantly in motion, and constantly having to think — managing a busy career or business, keeping your home life together, being there for your partner or spouse, children, extended family, and maybe even caring for aging parents.

On top of that, you might be pursuing further education, adding courses or certifications to your already overflowing plate.

With so much on your mind, it's easy to feel like you're always "on," with no room to relax or let your guard down. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Many women—especially those who are caring and heart-centered—believe that they just need to manage their time better. If only you could find a way to squeeze in everything on your to-do list, you could be the superwoman everyone seems to expect.

You may try new systems, apps, planners—constantly searching for that magic bullet that will allow you to do it all. But what if I told you that time management isn’t the answer?

Checklist

Why Time Management Isn’t Enough

Time management skills can certainly help you organize your day, but they can't address the root cause of why you're feeling overwhelmed.

More often than not, what you need are lifestyle changes. Because no matter how efficiently you plan, there’s only so much you can cram into a 24-hour day. The real question is: how long can you keep this up?

If you’ve been operating in survival mode for too long, it’s likely already taking a toll on you—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. That constant pressure to do more, be more, and never let anyone down isn’t sustainable.

The truth is, managing your time better won’t solve the problem. What’s needed is a shift in how you approach your life. You need to prioritize yourself—your health, your well-being, your peace of mind.

The Cost of Putting Yourself Last

I understand the temptation to keep pushing forward, to tell yourself that you just need to get through this week, this project, or this season of life. But the reality is, this cycle can go on indefinitely if you don’t make a conscious effort to break it.

At some point, if you don’t make time for yourself, your body will force you to. Whether it’s through burnout, illness, or overwhelming stress, there will be a moment when you can no longer ignore your needs.

The question is: do you want to wait until you reach that breaking point, or do you want to take control now?

I’ve been there myself. Looking back, I can see how unrealistic my expectations of myself were. I thought I had to do everything, that it was my responsibility to keep all the plates spinning.

But that’s simply a recipe for exhaustion and frustration. I wish I had understood earlier that I didn’t have to take it all on—that it was okay to ask for help, to say no, and to prioritize my own well-being.

Too Much

Reclaim Your Time and Energy

So how do you start making time for yourself, especially when it feels like there’s no time to spare? Here are some practical steps that can help you make the changes your spirit craves:

  1. Recognize Your Limits: Accept that you are only one person with finite energy and resources. No one can do it all and expecting that of yourself is unfair. Take a moment to reflect: What are your non-negotiables? What truly matters to you? This can help you identify what needs to stay and what can go. You wouldn’t expect your car to run on empty, so don’t expect that of yourself.

  2. Prioritize Self-Care: Self-care isn’t selfish, just the opposite. It’s a necessity. When you’re constantly giving to others, you need to replenish your own energy so you can continue to show up fully. This doesn’t have to be time-consuming. It could be as simple as a 10-minute meditation in the morning, a walk in nature, or taking time to read a book you love. What small self-care practices can you start building into your routine?

  3. Set Boundaries: It’s okay to say no. In fact, it’s essential if you want to protect your time and energy. Start by identifying where you tend to overextend yourself. Are there responsibilities you’ve taken on that aren’t truly yours to carry? Where can you begin setting healthy boundaries?

  4. Ask for Help: You don’t have to do everything alone. Whether it’s delegating tasks at work, asking your partner to share more of the household responsibilities, or seeking support from friends or family, allowing others to help can make a world of difference. Who can you reach out to for support today? Asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness, and you’ll often be surprised to find how much people want to help you.

  5. Reevaluate Your Commitments: Take a close look at your to-do list and ask yourself: is everything on the list truly necessary? What can be postponed, delegated, or eliminated? Sometimes, we get so caught up in the need to be productive that we forget to evaluate whether all that productivity is actually aligned with our goals and values.

  6. Create Space for Rest: Rest is not a luxury; it’s essential for your well-being. And it’s not just about physical rest. Emotional and mental rest are just as important. How can you carve out time for rest and relaxation in your daily life?

  7. Focus on What Energizes You: What activities light you up? What gives you a sense of joy, peace, or fulfillment? These are the things you should be prioritizing, not the endless list of obligations that drain you. When you focus on what energizes you, everything else becomes more manageable.

The Power of Small Changes

This is not about overhauling your entire life overnight. Small changes add up to significant shifts in your energy and well-being over time. Start with one or two simple changes and build from there.

Each time you choose to prioritize yourself, you’re sending a powerful message—to yourself and to others—that your well-being matters.

Ask yourself: how would your life change if you made yourself your number one priority? How much more energy, focus, and clarity could you bring to the people and projects that matter most to you?

When you take care of yourself, you’re not only doing it for you—you’re also showing up as your best self for those around you.

Energized

Don't Wait Until You're Forced to Stop

You have a choice: you can either make time for yourself now or wait until you’re forced to. Don’t wait until you’re burned out, overwhelmed, or falling apart. Start now. Choose to prioritize your health and well-being. It’s the most important investment you can make—because when you’re well, everything else in your life flows more smoothly.

It’s time to stop trying to do it all. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. You’re already enough. You deserve rest, joy, and time to simply be.

So, take a deep breath. Let go of the pressure to do more. And know that the most important thing you can do for yourself and everyone you care about is to make time for you.
