Power of Flow

The Power of Flow: Finding Joy, Ease and Lightness in Your Journey

August 21, 20247 min read

"Ask yourself: Is there joy, ease, and lightness in what I am doing? If there isn’t, then time is covering up the present moment, and life is perceived as a burden or a struggle." - Eckhart Tolle

Introduction:

This is a beautiful quote by Eckhart Tolle that has resonated deeply with me, and it’s one I find myself returning to often.

The wisdom in this quote speaks to a truth that many of us might recognize but don’t always live by. It took me a while to fully understand and feel the reality behind these words, and I want to share some insights that might help you embrace this powerful concept in your own life.

The Allure of Hard Work

For many of us, achieving a goal often feels synonymous with hard work. We’ve been conditioned to believe that anything worth having must come with struggle, sacrifice, and tireless effort. So, we push ourselves, even to the point of exhaustion, because we think it’s the only way to reach our desired outcome.

Maybe you’ve experienced this. You set your sights on a goal, and you work so hard that your life begins to feel like an endless grind. You tell yourself that this is what success demands. But what happens when you finally get there?

  • You may be too exhausted to truly appreciate your accomplishment.

  • The outcome might not match the effort you invested, leaving you feeling unfulfilled or even disappointed.

  • Sometimes, after all that struggle, you realize that the goal you fought so hard to achieve isn’t even what you truly wanted.

I know this cycle all too well. I’ve been there, pushing myself through the exhaustion and overwhelm, believing that struggle was the price I had to pay for success. But here’s what I’ve learned: when you infuse struggle and suffering into your work, what you often get in return is more of the same—more struggle, more suffering.

Overwhelm

The Impact on You and Those Around You

When you operate from a place of struggle, it’s not just you who suffers. The people around you—your family, your friends, your clients—end up receiving a version of you that’s drained, overwhelmed, and maybe even burnt out. They don’t get the best of you, and you don’t get the best of life.

You might be showing up physically, but emotionally and energetically, you’re barely there. Your work might still get done, but at what cost?

When we’re caught in this cycle of struggle, we often lose sight of the joy, ease, and lightness that Tolle speaks of. And without these elements, there’s no flow—no sense of alignment with the present moment, no sense of being in harmony with life.

Waking Up to Flow

For me, the realization that this wasn’t how I wanted to live came as a kind of wake-up call. I reached a point where I knew that continuing down the path of struggle and overwhelm wasn’t sustainable.

I wanted to experience joy, ease, and lightness in my life and work. I wanted to show up as the best version of myself, not just for others but for me.

The truth is, when you’re overwhelmed, frustrated, and exhausted, nobody benefits—not you and not those you’re trying to serve. But when you’re in the flow, when you allow yourself to experience joy, ease, and lightness, everything changes. You become more aligned with your true self, and the energy you put out into the world becomes lighter, more positive, and more impactful.

What Does Flow Look Like?

Flow isn’t just a nice idea; it’s a way of being. But how do you know if you’re in the flow? Here are a few signs that can help you recognize when you’re aligned with joy, ease, and lightness:

  • Things Feel Effortless: When you’re in flow, tasks don’t feel like a burden. Even challenging work becomes engaging and enjoyable because you’re aligned with your purpose.

  • Time Flies: You lose track of time because you’re fully absorbed in the present moment. There’s no rush, no anxiety—just a deep sense of immersion.

  • You Feel Energized: Instead of draining you, your work gives you energy. You feel lighter, more alive, and more inspired.

  • Creative Solutions Appear: When you’re in flow, solutions to problems seem to come to you naturally. You’re more resourceful, creative, and open to new ideas.

When you experience these things, you know you’re in the flow. But if you’re feeling the opposite—if everything feels like a struggle, time seems to drag, and you’re constantly depleted—it’s a sign that something needs to shift.

In the Flow

Finding Flow in Your Life

So, how do you move from struggle to flow? Here are some actionable steps you can take to bring more joy, ease, and lightness into your journey:

  • Tune into Your Body: Your body is a powerful indicator of how you’re feeling. If you’re constantly tense, fatigued, or stressed, it’s a sign that you’re operating from a place of struggle. Practice mindfulness and check in with yourself regularly. Ask: Am I feeling light and joyful, or heavy and burdened? Your body will guide you, if you let it.

  • Set Boundaries: One of the quickest ways to drain your energy is by overcommitting. Start setting boundaries that protect your energy. Say no to things that feel heavy and draining, and prioritize activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

  • Find Joy in the Process: We often get so fixated on the end goal that we forget to enjoy the journey. Shift your focus from the outcome to the process. Celebrate small wins and find ways to bring more joy and ease into your daily routine.

  • Embrace Rest: Rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt. When you’re well-rested, you can show up as the best version of yourself, full of energy and creativity.

  • Release Perfectionism: Perfectionism is a major source of struggle. It keeps you stuck in a cycle of overworking and never feeling quite good enough. As a 'recovering perfectionist' I know the truth of this. Allow yourself to be imperfect, to make mistakes, and to learn along the way.

  • Connect with Your Why: When you’re clear on your purpose, it becomes easier to stay in the flow. Reconnect with the reason behind what you’re doing. Why does it matter to you? When you’re aligned with your purpose, joy, ease, and lightness naturally follow.
